make sure its had all the re-calls done.....theres still one running at the mo for the cruise control. You may have heard the stories of people being killed because "it wouldn't stop....just went on, even with the brakes on?" Well after several years and different component changes, it appears to be the cut -off switch on the brake master cylinder....make sure its been done, also tyres were blowing in the states and had to be changed.....listen for knocking/tapping from the engine, timing chains and tensioners let go, and the driver side bank is driven from the BACK of the engine so it has to be removed and complete strip to replace (with special tools), also remember Ford dealers HATE them with a passion. Parts are expensive and the majority need to be factory ordered....discs and pads are common and cost two arms and a leg.....you are being warned!
In the end, although I already ordered up the fuel pump seal kit, I looked at how much work was involved if the pump needs to come out and decided I'd rather put a bit more money to what I would have spent and get something newer and more powerful.
And they are awesome off road. I remember the one at devils pit drove through the car park up the first little slope and stopped.
Was then loaded on to Hormygollop trailer and towed out the off road centre so it could be recovered.
I couldnt believe it snapped the steering rod, snapped clean through, I mean it was about 6mm in diameter on a big 4x4 and it just snapped.
One wheel facing one way the other wheel the other way, looked like clarence the lion from the front.
Say not always what you know, but always know what you say.
Haven't these cars got a reputation for spontaneously combusting- thus earning them the nickname "Ford Exploder" in the States?
That's the one
Also reputed to have an appetite for auto gearboxes. Colleague of mine had one for a couple of years - great for a year, then started eating bits of itself on a regular basis

It the risk of depressing him further, they are called Ford Exploders over here to, mostly by LPG installers. They have a composite intake manifold, LPG setups often do intake 'burps' when they need a service and ignites fuel in the intake blowing it to bits.
Good job you're not fitting LPG...........
