Right guys, cheers, webbo the o/d of the pipe is 3" so summat that just fit over the ends would be great, (as me mig skills are non existant) thought about plastic caps matt and metalsdirect do them either insert or over and if all else fails they'll do, pete! been looking at car hub centers but as ya say they dont give sizes, had a look in wilkinsons yesterday and saw some s/s tea/coffe/sugar things with domed tops but did'nt have me tape measure with me,

Ian, I'll have a chat with our steel suppliers to see what they have got, be it plastic caps or Stainless.
If you are using Mig you will need Stainless wire. If you have an Arc Welder to hand I can send you half a dozen 1.5 Stainless electrodes FOC with these it would be a fairly simple job of say four short tacks then sand and polish the welds back.

Cheer's Dave i'd prefer s/s ones to keep the "look" but at a push black plastic one'll do,
i did use s/s wire but wether it's me or the welder i'm not sure, it seems to "jerk" the wire out and looks like crow $hit stuck on there, it's only a cheapo unit and the gas lasted about five minuits, first attempt at feeding the s/s wire in resulted in it comeing through the side of the hose instead of out the business end, and the reel's tight on the spindle, i'm better with arc, made all the brackets useing that, and the auto darkening helmit is a god send, christ know why i've struggled with the old hand held mask for so long,
at least i can see what i'm striking on now
i just thought summat that fits over the ends will be easier, three pop rivits and job done, i'd be happy to pay ya for the rods mate, (and welding lessons) cheers ian

Dont worry bout paying for rods you are welcome to them, I've got loads. If I have no joy on Monday or you are not sorted, what I can do for you is cut some out by hand. What you can do is either tack them onto your tube,or weld say three or four tabs on the plates they can go into the id of the tube to be riveted self tapped or bolted etc.

what gas are you using ian.????and it sounds like you have punctured the liner in the hose,so the wire is gonna come out in spits and spats.try getting a new liner for the torch hose.and use an argon mix on the gas or stain shield.

It was a gas canister i got from the welding supply's mark, had argon on it, £9 and it did'nt last long, yup think the hose is f##ed, i was watching the end waiting for the wire to appear and it had come out the side of the hose, plus i think the regulator aint working to well, ebay £20 so im not surprised really,

i'll have to get to a "tech weedend" and see how the experts do it
