    Hi all,
this is a very serious matter...

In the 2007, the 'artist' Guillermo Vargas Habacuc, took a dog from the street, he tied him to a rope in an art gallery, starving him to death.

For several days, the 'artist' and the visitors of the exhibition have watched emotionless the shameful 'masterpiece' based on the dog's agony, until eventually he died.

Does it look like art to you?
But this is not all... the prestigious Visual Arts Biennial of the Central American decided that the 'installation' was actually art, so that Guillermo Vargas Habacuc has been invited to repeat his cruel action for the biennial of 2008.

I've just added my name too. The only way that pile of excrement should attend this event if if he is tied up and starved to death. I'd even pay to watch that.

                  duely signed, the sick barsteward.

                  :EDIT:
It would appear that the dog survived. Although in a poor state when found the dog only spent one day in the gallery before escaping.

All said though it's still wrong for this artist guy to use someone (in this case the dog) against its will, in the name of art. It may be an old cliché that many artists suffer in various ways for their work, but causing another being to suffer is another story.

Outrage is fun, but he didn't really starve a dog to death. The actual story starts with the fact that there are thousands of stray dogs wandering the streets in Costa Rica, diseased and starving. The guy did catch one and take it to a gallery, but he kept it fed and watered and it went on display for three hours a day for three days. I agreed it's fairly inhumane to tie a dog up for three hours but it's no worse than putting a tiger in a zoo.

The point he was making was that no-one gave a stuff about starving dogs on the street but as soon as he got one and showed it to people and said he'd done it on purpose they all got upset with him for doing it - as you're all proving.

Yup, gotta agree with you. There are various versions of the story flying around. Everything from the dog dies in front of gallery visitors, to it escaping after the first day.

                          My opinions:
Was it art? No, but then again so much of what is touted as art these days is rediculous
Was it cruelty? Probably, but it's not certain the dog was suffering any more than it would have done roaming the streets.
Should the artist be allowed to repeat it? Probably not.
Has it been blown out of all proportion? Yes

But... if as I've read recently, he brought it off the street starving, and then fed it (though he *said* he didn't for the sake of his 'art') then he has helped the dog, though pretty cynically in an attempt to foist the cr@p he calls art onto people.

However, one should never let reality get in the way of a good rant

                            This doesn't mean I dont think he's a t0sser though.

I could NEVER be accused of being a cynic (Well OK, maybe on days with a 'Y' in) BUT ......

It seems to me that the only connection with art was ensuring that half the western world became aware of an otherwise unknown and untalented (alleged) artist - and we have all colluded in the scam by giving him the oxygen of publicity ......

Life is too important to take seriously !
