3.0TD Or 2.4TD Whats Better ?

The jackable ones bolt to the chassis, the non-jackable ones attach to original step mounts (and are cheaper)

Buy an X-5, like I said. Unless you're really gonna go offroad, then buy a zook!

Yet again I must apologise for this bunch of nutters - they've obviously found the key to the medicine cupboard .......

As the rest have said it's best to go for the 3.0 and if you don't mind plastic (and hair curlers etc) then the 3rd gen is available with the vastly superior intercooled engine

Well speaking as an "oddball" he right!!! i fitted an intercooler and it aint made much of a difference, it's still feckin cr@p,

3.0 4Runner - tons of torque and they are TOUGH - I've run one in Africa for the past 3 years. Slightly modified but highly over loaded: 6km/l around town, 9km/l on a long run.

Hey Enzo, out of interest, how much weight have you carried on the roof? I know you mentioned the 'weak' roof on your website and have worked round it. I'm more interested in how much you've found you can put up there.

Some here seem to think putting as much as a spare wheel up there will make a Surf fall over. Meself, I think thats bullsh1t, and its a case (as always) of understanding your vehicles new limitations.

Total GVM (I weighed it at a customs weigh station: 3010kg - max recomeded was 2510kg). I've had 2 x 750/16 Michelin XZLs on Steel Landcruiser split rims (2 x40), plus 4 full jerricans of (4 x20)and a rooftop tent (40)and a metal trunk full of kit(90) so I'd say I had nearly 300kgs on the roof. This is with my roofrack design - I would never put this load on the roof if the roofrack was the type that bolted through the roof - those are inherently really weak in comparison to the type that uses roof bars that actually clamp onto the door frames.

Back was also full: 2 more jerricans; 1 large metal trunk; tool bag & spanner/ratchet set; Hi-Lift and 3 suitcase size/weight bags of clothes; check:

These loads were taken on fair tar roads at about 100kmh - 80kmh on murram or dirt tracks.

I doubt I'll be putting that much up there, just a single spare on a steel, perhaps a couple of jerry cans, a hi-lift strapped to the side and the rest of the stuff will be fairly lightweight. Just wanna keep the lesser used stuff out of the back.

Incidentally, I have been thinking of bolting the rack to the roof on standoffs, but knowing of the weaknesses, was thinking of adding plating / strengthening internally. Did you consider this approach and reject it?

No - didn't even consider drilling through the roof - what with the sun roof etc. It may look neater but I don't think it is as strong - you'll be limited to 70+ kg MAX.

Ah, the dreaded sunroof! I'm not blighted with one of them

I was gonna look to pick up the triple (I think) skinned bits towards the edges of the roof (the door frames you clamp the rack onto) and plate from there if necessary, if there's nowhere easy to anchor to.

I wont know until I have the head lining out, but it would be neater if there are strongpoints near the edge of the roof that I can pick up on. TBH I wouldn't bother at all if there's only the single skin in the area I want to use.

I have some aluminium blocks I was gonna tap @ M12, through the doubled / tripled part of the roof edge, through spreader plates perhaps welded internally. The blocks will be bolted using 1mm neoprene sheet cut to the shape of the block as a seal, and then the blocks tapped M12 on the top as well to take the rack.

When the weather is better (snow here today!) I'll get the head lining out and investigate. If it looks like I wont be able to strengthen it enough, or if it will be too much effort, I may end up nicking your 'floating' bar idea.

Apache, if your aluminium blocks come into contact with steel or steel fixings remember to use a jointing compound to prevent corrosion.

Duralac make a very good one.
