3rd gen gearbox types

hi all
Been looking at a few 3rd gen surfs & i've noticed that most have h4/H2 then H4L then L4L but some also have like the 2nd gen surf just H n and L4
can anyone tell me is one box better than the other?
i would have thought all 3rd gen would have the first option with locking diffs?

Multi-mode AWD is most common, but you still see the odd Part Time 4wd box like a 2nd gen.

The first is by far the better, as you have 2WD, AWD, and then the usual 4WD H and L range.

(only the t/case has diff lock, like Disco's and suchlike, otherwise AWD wouldn't work on the road, and if you couldn't lock it it wouldn't be true 4WD offroad.)
