  • some advice pls :(

last week i had the head pulled off my truck because there was a suspect issue with a valve. turns out it wasnt a problem with that, and it was just the shims but anyway my loss...

tonight is the first time ive taken it out on a long run, i picked up a lady friend and we went down to brighton. truck is fine, except a couple of things.

front heater was working fine, until i turned it to cold, and then i couldnt get it back over to hot because i suspect a kink in the cable.

rear heater is fine. but i noticed that it gets cooler if you are at traffic lights or are just stopped. but then if you floor it it gets red / burn hot as it usually does.

i was trying to work this out..
but then, we drove back from brighton, temp on the gauge never moved off just before half way, i was always checking just in case like.

i drop her off, and just as im about to pull away i look at the gauge and its all of a sudden at 3/4 mark. i go into brown mode, and decide the best thing to do is get moving for air flow.
earlier in the night i noticed the electric fan on but the temp on the gauge was still half way so didnt pay too much attention to it.

so now when im stopped at lights the rear heater turns to ice cold, but then if i revv it the temp gauge shoots up to 3/4. then if i keep it revved it goes back to dead on half way and the heater goes red hot again..

what the hell is going on? do i have an air lock or something?
when i got the truck back i left the rad cap off for a whole 24 hours to be doubly sure of air locks.

the water expansion bottle has not yet bubbled over but i also filled this up almost to the brim in case any air was let out and was replaced with water.

there is a slight wirring noise, sounds a bit like a belt on too tight but its hardly noticeable. is the water pump driven off a belt? and could this be slipping as this would explain if i revved it then the heater gets hot and the engine gets cool..

you dont understand how rubbish i feel now. ive just paid £600 to get my truck back in a worse condition

any help much appreciated. plumb_bob - what did i tell ya

Air locks, thats all. Dont panic! Revving it just winds the water pump up so gets the coolant through faster. Get the cap off tomorrow, put all your heaters up to max, and keep filling the rad until it can take no more. Squeeze pipes here and there to help bubbles out. It'll be alright mate, chill!

Taking a ladyfriend out, one wonders why you needed the heater...

ok, tomorrow i will take off the cap and run it up. thanks mate. hope i havent done any damage with hot spots. ive been to brighton and back doing 85 most of the way home.

lol brighton was very windy!! we walked on the beach and watched the massive waves, needed the heater then! hehe

mine was doing similarish things while i was running without a stat. If burping it again doesn't work try another thermostat.

If i were you i'd definatly get the burping "T" piece made up and fit it in the highest heater hose (nr the bulkhead) then you can do the pop bottle fill with the engine running and the thermostat cap on, the one in the pic is actually mattf jobby, i just made two up with just draincocks on and stuck em on each hose with a bottle on each one, you can see the coolant level dropping in the flow one and air expelled in the other, do it when the stats open, running temp!

Young lady friend eh!! down to brighton!! say namore, eh eh, nudge nudge wink wink,

                  ummmm wot's it like?

ok, i went outside for about an hour and a half and ive still not managed to bleed it fully. the truck only just got 1/4 of the way warm on the temp gauge, and both heaters inside were not that warm either. actually they were very cool but im not sure if thats partly because of the cool engine temp.

i will fill the rad cap, then 2 secs later it would bubble up and suck in the water, i got bored after an hour and half. on my bmw there was a house type radiator bleed valve...

i noticed that the heater hoses are the highest point, popeye, i dunno how to make that!
so without that what can i do here?
i neeeeed to drive her about tomorrow, ive not been able to get out today

did u rev the engine?u need to get temp a bit higher, hold it at 1500 rpm for a few mins, use the idle up switch, once its warm it will push the air out(ie normal runnin temp

ah theres the problem then! i was worried about removing the rad cap once the engine was hot though?
well i know what im doing tomorrow morning then..with a hangover no doubt lol

Without the T and once it's coold down enough to handle i'd remove the hose from the heater on/off switch thats bolted to the bulkhead and tip some coolant in there, if you have a spare bit of hose fit that to the switch and top that up to, keeping em both upright, then stick your thumb on the hose you removed and pull off the spare bit and shove the original one back on quickly, so you dont spill to much,

if you would like me to make a T up for you let me know, i think i've a draincock but if not the son in law can get me some i think, got the other fitting's, wont cost you nowt

thanks for all your help! that seems to have done the trick

i might still have some air trapped in the front heater hoses though, because i was waiting outside a mates earlier tonight and after a while it started blowing cool air. but rear is always red hot

i might pull a hose off from the bulkhead and see what happens..

fit a hose pipe to the small hose on the bulk head

i have had the same problem for ages now
