As far as cost of repair, only thing more expensive than a Surf is the engine, but bearing in mind that as long as you keep an eye on the Big End Bearings which were known to fail on 91 - 95 models (you can change them for about £80 - £90 and 4 hours work with the engin ein the car) the engine runs on for 300K miles no problem. Also sometimes the fuel pump has been known to leak and needs a rebuild which cost a few hundred. Injectors need an overhaul after 100- 150K miles which costs around £350.

The Suspension bushes wear out eventually but are cheap as chips, the diffs are solid and pretty unbreakable, and most other things on it are no more expensive than a Surf.

Just don't get it serviced at a main dealer.

My 80 has just gone over 200K miles (I've done 60K of them).
all this talk of repair and my Dads one went in today and now needs full exhaust, new heater motor (noisy as you like at the mo!!) plus general stuff like a service and new brake pads.
I borrowed it on Friday before I fixed mine to tow an Alfa 164 home - it makes it so easy! (compared to my 2.4)

        L/c

Hi had mine for 11 years now "Landcruiser" i mean and its the best thing since sliced bread, although being an import and automatic it is quiet thirsty. Done a trip down to Devon the other week to pick a Surf up and tow it back 490miles round trip aversge mpg 24.9 not bad towing a 2ton Surf, but as "LUCKY" said his Landcruiser is as good as a 2.4 Surf if not better, he has the UK model which has better gearbox and diff-ratio,s, only "BIG"thing i have had to replace is the exhaust 3 years ago £440 from Milners OH and 2 sets of batteries.

Just a mention about fuel economy. My new V8 Landcruiser Ute is about 3 litres per 100 km more efficient than the NEW 3.0l turbo hilux and about 5 litre's better off to run than my 2.8 litre hilux over 100kms
