I like that 80 series better, I'd like one of them one day, but with the cost of fuel, I doubt I could afford to run it.
My 80 is better on fuel than my 2.4 Surf was, between 26 and 28 average, as much as 30 on a run if you keep the speed down to 60.
As far as cost of repair, only thing more expensive than a Surf is the engine, but bearing in mind that as long as you keep an eye on the Big End Bearings which were known to fail on 91 - 95 models (you can change them for about £80 - £90 and 4 hours work with the engin ein the car) the engine runs on for 300K miles no problem. Also sometimes the fuel pump has been known to leak and needs a rebuild which cost a few hundred. Injectors need an overhaul after 100- 150K miles which costs around £350.
The Suspension bushes wear out eventually but are cheap as chips, the diffs are solid and pretty unbreakable, and most other things on it are no more expensive than a Surf.
Just don't get it serviced at a main dealer.
My 80 has just gone over 200K miles (I've done 60K of them).
