  • 4WD Relays

Hi All - can anyone please tell me where the relays are for the 4WD???

Once I know, I'm going to swap the ones over between the 3.0 and 2.4 and see if it's those that are causing the 4WD failure.

I've changed all the VSVs I can see, and the pipes as much as possible, but still no joy.....

Hey Andy, have a look at this link,

    http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/techsite/add.htm

if you haven't already, other than that, I did find a post saying that there is a 4wd relay adjacent to the brake pedal.
    Hope this helps.

Cheers Rob - I wish there was one for the 3.0L, as this one covers the 2.4 that has a vacuum tank under the OSF wheel arch....but it should help me out....

And I'll get looking for the relay once this is printed out...

Hi - I've found the 4WD control computer thingy, replaced the VSVs by the battery and the VSVs behind the engine, checked all the pipes, all the connections, all the power connections, the brake servo, switch on the transfer lever, cables and all sorts and this is where I am.....

Engine off ignition on - press switch on transfer lever - hear relay click, and (I think) sleeve engage (clunk sound) - press switch again, relay clicks off

Engine on - press switch on transfer, relay clicks on - move backwards, relay clicks off, then on, then off - move into D click on/off but this gets more frequent when applying the brakes (maybe something to do with vacuum from the brake servo??) but still relay clicks on and off.

I can't find the relays to swap them, unless the relay is actually the black control box behind the dash/stereo area???? the rain is getting worse, the light is fading and so are my hopes of ever getting this 4WD to work...

Mate a quick probable try is what i discovered when chaning my altenator. I knocked off the 2 pipes from the solenoids leading down to the diff. I put them back but wrong way around, and when i hit the 4wd button it engaged for a short time then dissengaged, and try and try again same thing happened. Swiched them over and it works fine....... Just a thougt buddy

Cheers Carl and Gary - I'm downloading the workshop manual now, and will fiddle with the pipes in the morning, although I'm pretty sure I put them back the right way around, but can't hurt to check....
