speedtest.net does seem to lie to you and tell you that you have a better speed than you do..
a more accurate one i have found is think broadband - their speedtest seems to be more true.
the only real way you can tell, is to find some very large files online that you can download directly. eg, some linux cd's.
when you have found two different ones, say 800mb+ each, start to download both at the same time and leave it for a minute so the speed settles.
then write down what each is downloading at, so one might download at 150kbps and the other at 100kbps.
add these two figures together and it makes 250kbs total.
then times this figure by 8 because there is 8 bits in a byte and 250 is kilo bits not kilo bytes and you get 2000 which is 2mb
with my broadband i personally get between 800kbps and 1000kbps which = 6.4mb - 8mb.
remember when you first have your adsl line activated it goes through some sort of training mode and your speed will be super quick for about 2 weeks. after this it will be capped. when i first had my line activated i had 14mb actual download speed for 2 months. now its capped to about 6.7mb
not all service providers do this though.Last edited by dieselboy; 11 December 2009, 00:35.Oh Nana, what's my name?
