unless you have a real bad wirless card then your wireless will always be able to keep up with your broadband.
for what its worth on a 4mb Virgin link so its spot on.

I got much the same as you Alan, same Virgin deal, same area and from a wireless laptop.

Just thought, my upload was a wee tad faster and my download a wee tad slower, but I have a cat lying on the front of my laptop. Will that make a difference?

I got this. Buggered if I know what it means though.

the first bit, usually the highest number is the download speed to you machine in kilo bits per second. so devide by 1000 and you will get your mega bit speed. do the same for the smaller number and you get your upload speed.

if you have an 8mb connection, they actually mean 8 mega bit and not mega byte.
8 mega bit - 8000kilo bits per second.
if it was 8 mega byte it would be a true 8mb...
8 mega bits = 8000 / 8 = 1mb download speed.

this will be limited through a phone line a different times of the day depending on people in your street or the type of service.
eg; dont go with crap suppliers like tiscali or talk talk unless you dont mind getting a 60kbps download speed at busy times
this is like modem dial up from years ago!!!
