cover a nice jaggy dogbrush with a nice natural unwashed rabbit skin and play fetch, that way the dog won't grip the carcass too hard when retrieving what you have shot.Alan

this thing is 21 months and as excitable as hell, he just never stops, impossible to physically tire out but cant get lead/collar out without him going nuts, just looking for some other way to channel his energy, he is quiet obedient and retrives well , comes on command every time but just needs to calm down a bit and thats why i thought some sort of gundog training may be helpful as they are very disciplined and it uses there mental agility as well as physical
EDIT: like the idea of the rabbit skin, but where the hell would i get one ?
Im not into shooting, although would like to take it upLast edited by evil_jesus; 26 February 2008, 21:39.

does everyone in your household treat it the same? ie, if one person is strict but others let it do what it wants then no amount of good training from the one person will make a difference. what breed is it?i swear, it was like that when i got here...

so is the main issue just that he's still a bit lively when out and about off the lead or are there other problems with behaviour, because at 21 months that's still quite young. as long as they behave indoors and come to heel when called to while off lead then that's all that i'm bothered with.
i've had my new GSD for a shade over 4 weeks now, he's about 19 months old approx and still very lively but well natured. today there was a group of 4 golden retrievers (2 were 16 week old pups) and 2 older GSD's and he kept running round all of us (owners included) herding us! 1st time he's done that...very funny to watch, and whenever another dog wandered into the field he ran off to see if he could add them to his herd too!i swear, it was like that when i got here...

lively isn't the word.... its like hes being fed red bull 24/7... yea, i think lively is the only prob/issue and im thinking maybe its something im doing or not doing and not giving him the stimulation.
Only other issue is i have never been able to get him to walk on lead properly...always a battle for first 20 mins
Comes back on first call every time (maybe 2/3 if other dogs about )
Stays on command and wont move until told to
wont touch his dinner unless told to
Retrives and drop back at feet ( i know he shouldn't drop it )
