Complete novice needs help...

Totally new to Surfs and posting on these types of forums. Have about £4K to splash on a 4x4 and love the Hilux Surf. Can any of you experts out there help me?

What's the difference between SSR-G, SSR-X, 4runner etc etc.

Do you have any advice on what I should be looking for and what I should be avoiding.

Welcome. All your questions will be answered by using the search function. Spend some time browsing through that section, it covers everything. Then if your still stuck come back and ask and you'll be amazed at the amount of help you get.

Thing is new posters always ask the same questions (naturally) so the search route is where to head for first.
But to answer a couple of your questions SSRG is normally the highest spec followed by SSRX. The Surf is imported from Japan, the 4 Runner is the UK version. The Surf normally has higher specifications that the 4 Runner.
