opinions, facts n figures SWB 4X4

evening peeps. my younger brother wants an old 4x4 (by old i mean the same era as 1st and 2nd gen surfs) that isn't as awful on fuel as the surf because it will be his daily driver but he also wants something that is robust enough to do a bit of offroading once we've modded it.

a friend recently sold an immaculate m%$*&^%$&i SWB paj on an F plate. think it was either 2.5 or 2.8 intercooled, but know naff all about them because they're not my cup of tea.

so, what's good, what's shoit, whats the common problems to look out for on the gooduns.

i want him to get a hilux pickup but the fuel side of things is quite a factor. and before anyone says it, yes i know no 4x4 rocks on MPG but there's got to be some out there that make the surf look as fuel efficient as a Hummer.

cheers guys, he laughed when i showed him the sj413, i'll see what he thinks of the fourtrak. he would love a surf, but unless i can show him one that does about 30mpg he'll cry at the petrol stations! he likes the look of those bl00dy paj's (rhymes with...), does anyone know what mpg the swb 2.5/2.8's get? i know i could look on another site but that'd feel dirty and wrong!!!

Yeah, Fourtrak, even though the only people you see driving them are over 80's wearing flat caps and bits of straw, and smelling of sheep p1ss

Paj's and fourtrack will cost about the same as a surf to run, but he could run any of them on veg oil to keep the cost down.

really? i assumed that a SWB would be lighter and if the paj is intercooled and a larger engine than a 2.4 i thought that would make it far more fuel efficient than the surf. but if they have the sameish MPG then he won't be pleased and will probably have to stick to a pug 306. that or learn to love the sj413 thingy!

I do like that......but stuck with the mondeo for at least a couple of years yet.

Far as I know, the Fourtrak's are more economical. Not by vast margins, but they are. Paj is roughly the same as a Surf on MPG.

yeah he really likes them but needs some mpg figures on the various motors mentioned. anyone got a decent link to a 4x4 mpg comparison or something similar. been trying a few owners forums for different 4x4's but they all take an age to search or you cant searech without registering or some other annoying cr@p. long and short of it, we got the best 4x4s and the best owners forum...no wonder they all hate us surf owners!!!!

Logey, SWIMBO's 2.5 SWB Auto Mitsy Diesel Turbo intercoolered is 20 - 22 depending !!!! Hope that Helps
