You need to make a certain amount of torque through the converter, and a big tyre will require more torque to start turning. Not really a matter of weight, a bit like trying to pull away in 4th gear.
Would this be a time when a manual would be better, or would you just eat clutches?

Im not a fast driver anyway - it will be a shame to be lacking anything at all extra but its not overly important due to the lack of miles i do.

Ive heard manual is best with the correct gearing - otherwise its just lost! without auto is erm...(anyone got a nice way of saying cr*p?)
