  • A question for those of you who have broken vehicles

I wanna start breaking my old surf soon, but a few questions before i do -

How do you go about disposing of what's left once you've stripped what you wanna keep / sell? And what are the likely costs involved?

Can you do the paperwork and so on yourself or do you have to get a Certificate of Destruction to discharge liability for the vehicle?

Any other tips for someone breaking a vehicle for the first time?

I'm not really looking to break the whole thing unless it goes very quick. Or make much money on it. Just need to cover any costs of getting rid really, and keep hold of a few bits to transfer over to the new surf. A few extra quid in the pocket would be a bonus though.

Your local scrap man should take whats left(for free) as there is a lot of weight in the chassis and the body.

This is gonna sound really dumb, but when you say scrap man would i be right in assuming you're talking about scrap yards and vehicle dismantlers and so on?

I haven't been to my local one yet, just read on the website of one of the big kent ones (http://www.reclamet.co.uk/scrapitnow/index.htm) and they want all 4 wheels and the engine, to collect for free, now that's not really a major problem except that i wanna keep the rear axle.

I'm quite happy to put it on a trailer and take it to the scrapyard but if i just turn up at a scrapyard with half a vehicle on a trailer will they just lift it off and give me a certificate of destruction? Or if i've already started to break it will they want to see any paperwork before taking it?

did you then register it scrapped or did you sign the log books over to them as if you had sold it to them or how does the paperwork side of it work doing it that way?

I sent off the log book stating that I scrapped the vehicle.

Leave it out front with a 'For sale' sign on it and the pikeys will take it .

Or like Jon said as we scrapped a couple before and got rid of the remains for nothing via a local scrapman.

I have NEVER paid for or given away a car to be uplifted, always managed to get some money and the price of scrap metal these days.... guys round here were offering £100 minimum for whole cars inc collection and as you say the weight of a surf, partially stripped or not...

you are doing them a favour, not the other way round

Hi mate, try APM Metals in sittingbourne, They're in the book, they may even collect, but if you can trailor it there, they'll give you market value on the weight of the steel.
Or as said, a specific 4x4 breaker may take the shell, but probably only if there's some bits still on it worth selling.

You can double check the paperwork by calling the DVLA, but I'm pretty sure that the bit on the log book abou sc ra p ping it will do.
