                • OK, calm down everyone.

Insults have started to be traded, and offences taken. I did not in any way intend my original post to degenerate into this sort of thing. I'm pretty sure that any 'off-hand' comments anyone has posted are meant in a light-hearted joking manner, but the nature of the forum means that it's easy to take a comment the wrong way. I started this thread to stimulate healthy intellectual debate, not to start a slanging match.

May I respectfully request that if anyone wishes to continue this discussion they keep their posts to strictly dealing with the physics of aircraft flight (or non flight depending on your - incorrect - point of view). If that turns out to not be possible, then I will close the thread.

Oh, and to answer a question someone asked a couple of pages back, I don't know of a definitive answer. The nearest anyone has come to trying to replicate the scenario as far as I can tell is on the TV show Mythbusters (the scientific value of their experiments will be left to another discussion please), the episode of which is due to be shown tonight in the USA.

Thank you all for your co-operation.

Convince me of what? That it will take off? That incident light can be measured in watts? Whats? What?

It's theoretical conveyer, it dosn't have to work!

If the motors arn't running, the plane will go backward on the conveyor yes? start what ever means of propulsion you want, and stop the plane going backwards. now increase engine thrust, as long as the conveyor can outpace any thrust of the motors, with the help of friction and gravity it won't go anywhere.

Its not in space where it would work.

I'm going down the pub now, run out of remotely sensible ways to drag it out any longer.
