  • cold air induction? better than hot recycled air?

i have a 2.4 td surf 1990, i am told that they recycle the gasses and use it again.
if that is true then hot air is going back in to the engine, this will reduce boost to the turbo. colder the air the going in the better, this gives more boost to the turbo. also cools the engine, ( thats were the head probs come in to it possibly ).
i have read on the internet that some block off the recycle pipe with a blank gasket on the engine end.
but what do you do with the other end that has the vacum pipes on, ( blank them off ? )
is it good or bad to do this, will it upset the engine fuel / air mix / ecu / timing, etc.
if you have blanked yours off please let me know how its working ?
colder air = more power , cooler engine, less smoke, please tell me what you think ?

    Do a search for 'EGR'.

There's no noticeable increase in performance (though there may be a placebo effect! ) but it really does reduce the visible particulates (smoke) a lot and running is perhaps a tiny tad smoother.

Cut a hole in your bonnet, stick a nice big air vent in it, and plumb in an intercooler!!

Just fit a blanking plate. You don't need to disconnect the EGR assembly completely. You're just wanting to prevent the exhaust gasses from being recirculated.

thanks i will do that, and put a cold feed to the air box ( flexy pipe / ram air )
ps do they have dump valves on them ( reciceling ones )
if so rurn it round and it will hold the boost longer, works on my evo.

How do you get a 2.4 to go fast enough to get ram air effect??

PUSH IT OFF A BIG CLIFF OR get a diving tank ,fill with compressed air to 300 psi , put a regulator on the end to get about 5 psi , put it on air pipe on throttle body intake, it will last for about 3 or 4 mins boost, like a super charger, if fueled right. DONT DO THIS IT WILL MAKE THE CAR RUN WEEK AND HOT.

I JUST MEANT TO GET MORE COLD AIR TO THE AIR BOX ( like ram air )

I know a chap in australia that runs a "dry ice intercooler"

His intake temps are -27 degres C

Thats one way of doing it!!!
                    More Lift.
                    More Tyres.
                    More Engine.

Diesels running lean run cooler. More fuel = more heat.

These are not sports cars, if they're made to go fast they'll be dangerous, unless you spend a fortune and lower it, then you'll be banned

By banned, read 'thrown into ominous black transit by thugs and driven to a remote, secret location, bundled into a hessian sack, and thrown into a ravine.....full of crocodiles....'

See - lowering of Surfs is bad!

Just throw em in the gulley at the back of where I work. Its a 25-30 degree drive though for about 300 metres. No-one goes there but me, and then I'm not stoppin cos its a bit soft, so once I've been through a few times they'll be mushy, and then we can squash them under the cut down trees...
