Is it possible to modify a air conditioning pump into a air compressor? anyone done/seen/read about this?
I need a pump for my new 33" as I have to air down from 38.5psi to 10psi.
Which means when I pack up at the end of the trial I'm going to be there forever with one of those weedy pumps that run off a ciggy lighter

    Any thoughts

sounds like a good idea might be worth investigating army trucks i know the old six wheelers used to blow thier own tires up, presume it was something that ran of the fan belt

                That is very cool!!!!!!!!!

I may have a few supra ones lying about... I'll go and check... they look very similar to Hilux ones, probably the same part!!!

air con pumps need oil lube inside the mechanicals this can be done by a drip feed but traces of oil in your tyres or tubes is a no no .

Maybe you could have some kind of filter after it or something??

I can confirm about the pumps needing oil... I had a system topped up and they must have failed to oil it as shortly after the pump seized solid!

Lots of compressors need oil, including the ones used to provide air at filling stations etc and air is regularly oiled to provide lubrication for air tools. If you're really worried about it you can put a filter unit in the outlet from the
compressor to remove the oil. I haven't bothered and haven't seen a problem

You can get a combined filter / water trap for air systems, they are normally used for air fed masks for spraying so it goes without saying they can be quite expensive

When I binned my aircon I looked into doing the compressor for air mod. Decided against it as the compressor remains attached to the engine even though you might air down your tyres a couple of time a year.

I bought one of these (£39) and have been well impressed. Takes a couple of minutes to pump up one of my 33's. I have used it several times to pump up other car tyres (it being portable an' all). It lives in the back of my truck in a nice little nylon case.
