  • More dopey questions, sorry.

    Morning all

Ok, been doing a load more reading and searching on here.

At some point soon I want to head off road and see how the truck performs. Is there anything I need to do before and after?
For example I've read about axle and gearbox breathers, are they needed before taking a plunge? and what would i need to do post-session, is there any special maintenance ie re-lubing or fluid changing the truck would need?

    Cheers

A lot will depend on what sort of terrain you are driving over. If you are going into deepish water then diff breathers are probably a must to stop water ingress into the diffs. Similarly you would also probably need a snorkel if going any deeper than about 15-18 inches as the airbox inlet is behind the n/s headlight and could get swamped if you drive too fast.

I believe the main suggestion is take recovery gear with you and don't go alone but with at least one other similar sized 4x4 so that there is someone on hand to tow you out if you get stuck. Oh, and make sure it's legal for you to drive on the land you are intending to traverse.

                  Cheers.

I had a quick glance a bit back (before it got muddy lol) I couldn't see anything, although it didn't really know what to look far...

It’s a totally different world... I am a fairly competent mechanic when it comes to supras and various engine transplants; this stuff is totally alien to me!

There's nipples on all of the propshaft joints, and at the transfer box. If your truck is lifted, you can just shuffle underneath and lie there admiring it, and noticing where the nipples are at the same time.

There's nipples on the ball joints too, though they might not be fitted. I had blanking plugs in mine, though the low profile of the nipples I have now (thanks Tony!) mean they dont seem to catch anywhere.

I do the prop shaft every time I use it heavily offroad, but the BJs dont seem to need constant regreasing and seem to hold their grease OK.

Thanks guys, top stuff as ever

I won't go alone, or anywhere I shouldn't do. I've read too many bad experiences on here about that

Its just the mechanicals really. Thanks for that link Woodzie, I seem to have missed the wood for the trees when searching for info

How often do you guys grease your nipples then, so to speak
And do you just top the grease up, or do you pump in a fair amount to displace the old grease in there ?

I'll stay away from water too untill i've read some more about breathers.

                      Cheers
