  • Was thinking about this...but are 2.4's best avoided.

A 91 (J, I think) 2.4TD Hilux surf, dont know if its an SSRX ect ect, 145k (about 90k miles) seemingly well looked after. My mate has a 3.0TD on an N reg but says the 2.4's are not good engine's unless the seller has bills to prove about the head work/rebuild that should have been done.

    Its selling for about 1500

Are the 2.4's best avoided then...

So stick to a 3.0, thing is there's none near me (I'm near East Kilbride), I was thinking about swaping 97' Volvo V70 auto est for one.

stick to the 3.0 mate, you will only regret it afterwards, they dont have much poke for road use tbh. off road ive never wanted more power.

but some have been really unlucky with the 2.4s, and their heads are referred to as playdough or similar.
when i bought my surf, all that came with it was an mot, tax. no reciepts what so ever, but i did ask a lot of questions and look in the necessary places. mine has been fine bar some minor probs. not including broken glow plug tip - i think im the odd one out there
        Oh Nana, what's my name?

Don't believe that every 2.4 will fail. 3.0s had problems too.
Plenty of 2.4s run fine. Be careful, and try to choose a later model -- I've been told that late '92 models onward had the 3L headm as opposed to the problematic 2LTE head (haven't been able to confirm yet).

I've got one of each. both of them have suffered a cracked head. Both of them in the same place (between the valves on No4).

Normally the bottom end is rock solid.

There is a problem with the early 2.4 head which made them more prone to cracking. Many of them have had the modified head on and give no more problems, the one I bought (which I knew had an engine problem) turned out to have a cheap head on which had cracked again, I've replaced it with a stevo head and had no further problems.

Likewise TonyN (and loads of others) have had no problems with their 3.0ltr motors.

It depends on what you want, a 2.4 surf produces about 95 BHP the 3.0 ltr is more powerful. If you intend to tow get a 3.0ltr

            Hope this helps

If you are on a budget, the 2.4 surf is a great choice!

Its a lot of truck for your money.

yeah 2.4s pop there heads, so do the 3.0ltrs. and recently on here there have been more reports of 3.0ltrs going then 2.4s (That don't really mean much im just spiteful and keepin the dream going for the 2.4s )

              ANYWAY!

Dont feel like you have been cheated if you get a 2.4, Dont think its a time bomb Just be happy you scored an awesome truck at a great price!!!

I didnt get any paperwork at all when i got my truck, other then a tax disc wedged in the seats.

mines still going fine! No majour problems in well over a year.

              An i love it

                Rod's got a point!

I have to say that I bought my 3.0 ltr first, it had no problems for the first 18 months, I think the head just decided to crack one day. Sheet happens that way.

Is it for sale with a Dealer? If so they are legally obliged to provide a warrenty (even if it is only 90 days).

If you decide to go for it just remember that Jap red antifreeze & european stuff don't mix, they turn into a sludge (which could have helped kill my surf!!)
