    Evening all

Off to wales in a few hours time. I've only had my surf a short time and have driven it very gently to save on fuel but haven't had chance to work out the mpg yet.

On the motorway I usually hold it at 55-65. Over the next week I'll be doing about 1000miles so need to keep the economy sensible.
Does it make a lot of difference driving very gently? only I seem to see figures of 22-28mpg banded around but those quoted figures don't seem to drop much when towing or driving faster.
If it speed doesn't make much difference to economy then I may as well drive faster and obviously get there a bit quicker.

In a normal car it makes quite a difference but does speed effect a surf as much?

    Any idea appreciated.

Incidentally, its had a lift and has big mud tyres fitted.

    Cheers

aerodynamics of a brick will and do have effect, mine runs locally and gets about 24 mpg gently on a motorway and 31 isnt difficult to get, floor it or tow and its very low 20's

Penryn in Cornwall to Northampton, just under a full tank. thats cruising at 70, standard surf on road biased tyres.
Northampton back to Penryn, full loaded, strong headwind down the A30, about a tank and a quarter. Thats cruising at 70mph again, with the same tyres, but with a 5 inch lift this time.

frankly my dears i don't give a damn, drive it like you stole it, the only thing i will say is ,i would have thought off road tyres would create more friction on tarmac both being more grippy and heat generating causing lower mpg and possible blow out of tyre. i stand to be corrected .

I can tell you cos i tried both when i drove from scotland to cornwall and back, 1,350 miles total. Way down i did 60mph all the way and i got 31 mpg unbeleievably on hard road tyres. On the way home i did 70-75mph and she returned 26mpg, 5mpg difference.

I would say ive lost 3 mpg wiv my muds so i would say go 55-65 as you said. Also i noticed that when doing 70 mph on my muds they got quite hot with the extra resistance so would be worth doing it for that too.

Doing that speed on muds at 30 psi i estimate 26-28mpg.
