  • hello! and can i have some info!

hello all, a newbiw here looking at getting a surf,
wasnt goin to look yet but have just seen a grey 2.4td manual (with a new clutch!) for 1600 quid, but!! the T-BELT light is on and i havent seen the turbo light come on as yet, i havent driven it as yet but it didnt come on when reved stationary,
anything i should look for before purchase? and if the T-BELT light means i need a new timingbelt, how much does that cost?
    thanks loads in advance!!

always a good idea to get a new belt, but it could be that the light wasn't re-set on the last eplacement, or that the conversion from km to miles has upset it.

on a 2nd gen you can reset it yourself... er... think it's a button behind a rubber bung on the dash isn't it??

turbo won't boost high enough when stationary to light up the turbo light.
nee nar nee nar, i'm a fire engine!

You are correct in summising that the belt needs changing - the T-Belt itself is fairly cheap, but it takes several hours to do a 2.4

I cannot comment on the turbo, did it feel like it came on (ie the bulb has gone)?

By the way welcome to the nuthouse

      Beware the yeti !!
Look out Eastbourne, the Pandas are coming !

slug your right, there is a rubber bung on the instrument panel next to the reset button on the odometer.turbo wont produce boost stationary,it needs loading.i.e take it for a drive.timing belt needs replacing at 100,00 kms i think.and its a bit of a pig of a job to do on a 2.4 as trev has said.allow at least two hours.

                  thanks fellas!
i shall watch out for any yetties!
i must be honest i couldnt really tell if the turbo was coming in or not, although it did "rock when i rev'd it"
i suppose i am a little paranoid about the head going on one of these, as ive been reading up on this site for a few weeks now, so looked at the coolent and it was a little low,
oh! and the other strange thing was the clocks were in mph? though all imports were in kph?

                      usually converted to mph...
either a new face on the clock, or a sticker over the kph and a new chip in the speedo ( i think)

the clock face has been changed, but the odometer will still read in kms.

That is normal for these, the importers usually fit new gauge faces, your speed will be in MPH, but the distance may well be in KMs.
