    Tougher import test

THE COST of grey imports is set to soar this year as tougher tests...

    Last five bulletins:

THE COST of grey imports is set to soar this year as tougher tests are launched for cars entering the UK from outside Europe.

Anyone buying a non-EU car will have to put it through a more difficult version of the current Single Vehicle Approval (SVA) test.

The new rules come into force on 1 August, and importers warn the average cost of a test will rocket from £250 to up to £1500 per car.

"This extra cost will inevitably be passed on to the consumer," says Richard Moore of the importers' group the British Independent Motor Trade Association.

"We are extremely disappointed. This is bad news for consumers: it adds another layer of red tape, making it more expensive and difficult to bring in cheaper, more interesting niche cars."

Moore predicts higher SVA costs will reduce the number of grey imports entering the UK from 25,000 in 2000 to 20,000 this year.

The tougher SVA will bring new tests on steering, emissions, security, seatbelts, brakes and noise.

CAP Grey Book editor Robert Hester says tougher SVA tests will help make grey imports more accepted by British buyers.
"These regulations are set to make imports a safer investment, but the developments will come at a price."
Grey imports are sourced from outside Europe - often Japan - whereas parallel imports are from within the EU.

oops well some people may have missed it, also it might keep the price of our surfs up iff we ever sell, disadvantages are if we want to buy a new one from a dealer they will add the extra to the price

it makes the public think these vehicles arent even road worthy,
pity they dont do these sort of tests on the write offs which are put back on the road and sold to unsuspecting buyers, i think anything which is a write off should stay a write off

            It makes you wonder sometimes.
This is for the SVA test. vehicles over 10years old dont require an SVA test just the standard MOT.

With approximately 20,000+ new vehicles being imported a year, it's another excuse for the government to fleece the public again. I wouldnt mind if I new the extra money was going to something worthwhile instead of pay rise for the Blairists and extra holidays for the MP's..ooh slap my wrists

Do you think it will keep the costs of existing imports high?

Sorry to be pessimistic but the other outcome is that vehicles already in this country devalue as they didn't go through the more stringent test. Given the reluctance of the general public to accept grey imports I can see this being the case.

Perhaps Surf (and hopefully Subaru's as my other car is a JDM Forester) will be OK as they are fairly specialist.

second hand price should be good as the SVA goes up. this cost will be added to the screen price of the vehicle

                          Don't panic !

This report was dated 10/01/2001 ,the ESVA test has been in place for some time, and it's not made that much difference.
