  • Black Exhaust

my surf is a '91 2.4 diesel. I put the new head on it bout 4 months ago. But it tends to have really dark exhaust fumes when first starting her up. Like so bad that there is a black patch of diesel / exhaust on the ground from starting it once. And it stutters quite a bit untill the engine is warm. Any ideas ? thanx

wait for the glow plug light to go out, and then continue waiting for the beep before cranking it over
    see if that helps

it is cold up here but the smoking has always been. Thanx for the advice but I do wait for the glow plug light to turn off as well till the noise thing comes on before I start the engine.

Honestly I wish I knew what you meant by that but since I don't I will ask. I don't know what you mean, so I probably have not had it done.

Have you checked/changed your air filter?

When you start from cold, the ecu will enrich the fuel mixture like a choke on the old carburetta'd gas engines, so it's possible that the mixture is too rich therefore causing black smoke.

Check your ecu for fault codes, or get to a diesel injection specialist to check the cold start system, it may be a faulty o2 sensor.
