But getting back to your problem I think the best thing you can do is say you found in locked in your garage, if you have one and that you've just found it.
If you have no garage just say you found it in the garden somewhere.

It depends on how honest you feel you have to be, If you think it will upset her more, go for the "found in my garage/shed/cellar etc etc tale.

You could also dispose of the cat and say nothing
