  • Somethings whining..

...and for once its not my wife.

There's a bit of a whining noise when accelerating, kind of like a fan belt noise but not nearly as bad. It goes away once engine running faster. Seems to be a little worse if steering.

Also goes away if turn stereo up really loud. All belts seem pretty tight though-any idea's

    cheers

check the power steering fluid level... that wouldn't be like a belt slipping, but a whirring noise...

Sounds about right, Isn't there a warning light that should come on?

Where do I fill it to?

      Thanks for reply

Check the belts - if they are the type with a notch in you get crud in the gaps and it squeals as it goes over the pulleys. the belts dry out as well and you can get a lubrication spray for them
        NO WORRIES!

no warning light, it's pretty obvious where to fill to, it has a marker inside the reservoir... i think these just fill right up (but don't quote that!) top it up and give the steering a couple of turns and check again, just to get it all round to the pump.

it's usually the same stuff as A/T fluid that's used, but it will say what on the lid.... (sorry i'm a bit vague, but it's cold out and i can't be assed looking!)

Its cold andDARK thats why I'm asking about level on here instead of looking!

My 30 year old scimitar has a little light that comes on when you lift the bonnet-pretty nifty , shame it doesn't have a heater too.

Theres a little dipstick on the underside of the filler cap!

With Hot or Cold levels on each side, so you can check it when ever you want!

                Use Dextron II fluid.

You may have worn bearings on the pump.

Topped up oil (needed about 1/2inch), and put silicone spray stuff on belts, seems to have stopped whirring now. Belts aren't overly tight, how tight should they be? How do I tighten the two smaller ones?

Thanks up to now, been a great help.

you want about 10mm of deflection when you press on the belt, at the middle of its longest gap between pullys.

On a 2.4, the alternator belt adjuster sticks out 90 deg from the engine, between the air-con pump, and the alt. (there is two bolt heads I think, its the lower one.)

it has a locking nut that you need to loosen with a socket and extension bar, its on top ofthe alt, under the aircon pump and is tricky to see.

Once you've found it, the adjuster nut is obvious.
