Go for it. You won't regret it. I am shortly moving on to my second surf. I wouldn't consider any other vehicle. It is the only 4x4 a know of with a useful boot. Don't worry about fuel costs. At the end of the day depreciation costs a whole lot more than fuel and its a whole lot more fun than a Mondeo or Volvo estate.

well turbolax is about 2.99 from boots.
3000-3500 would get you a proper 3.0 litre 2nd gen,less money if you bag a bargain!!

It doesn't have to be like Lindas, I think that may have expensive modifications?? But it does need to be clean and seriously reliable.
We've had the 'Skud' four years and nothing has ever gone wrong on it. Every year OH delights in telling me the bad news - it's passed it's MOT! And this is a '96 model

They grow into rav 4's and then surfs

Its absolutely practical. Obviously being a two tonne truck it is a bit less economical than a Smart car but it does everything a nomal family car can do but better. Quite why people are selly because they are having kids I don't know, other than trying to raise cash. They are ideal family cars, loads of room for kids, dogs, bikes or even your other half.

I am trying to sell my 2nd gen, see surfs for sale, which is a good example of what you can buy for under three grand.

The footprint is not much bigger than a Vectra or Mondeo estate. You can also park in a field.
