  • @Bushwhacker RE: Wheel Bearings

Hi Vince, thanks for your help last week when I enquired about my wheel wobble problem. Had it all checked out this week and I'm going to replace the wheel bearings on both sides.

Had a look on Roughtrax and I'll be ordering these items tomorrow:

    http://www.toyotahilux.com/?doc=16&cid=161&vid=1078
    http://www.toyotahilux.com/?doc=16&cid=161&vid=223

I think that's all I need but could you tell me if I need anything else before I place the order please?

    Cheers mate.

    Jim.

No rumbling mate, just a lot of play. Thought I'd get it done with new bearings though as the wheel spacers I have fitted put extra load on them and the Surf has 73,000 km on the clock.

When you say play,do you mean when you jack up the front and grab the wheel top and bottom it moves slightly,as if the wheels not tightened up properly??????????

Yep! Exactly that mate. Track rods etc all checked out okay, only problem found was the play on the wheel bearings.

I'm afraid mines gone way past 'the ever so slight' stage!

Well that's everything ordered up, came to a grand total of £80.83p.

Just 83p more than I got when I sold my old set of alloys with almost new tyres on them!

Will get the new bearings fitted next weekend (weather permitting) and then (hopefully) no more wheel wobble!

Dont under estimate the amount of grease required. Its an 3/4 inch deep in the hubs
The bearing carriers are notched to allow a drift in from behind to remove.
Use the old carriers to chap in new ones mind their tappered
Make sure you pack new bearings well
Make sure the seals sit flush on rear of hub
Leave the hub cover nuts on loose and use two bolts screwing evenly to pop the cone washers saves them pinging all over the place.
Get tourque settings correct inner and outter nuts are different
You will need about 2hr rain free start to finish
                        good luck mate

No expert mate I'm always asking stuff, but both myself and my brother KERRSURF will give things a go. I hope to have a new workshop built by spring I'm in central between Cumbernauld and Stirling and all members will be welcome if I can help them.
