Hi Chris, thanks for the info. Looks like my checks will have to wait until tomorrow now as I've had a busy morning with other stuff. I'm not driving the Surf until I have this sorted. Hopefully the weather will be kind tomorrow.

could also be worth checking that all the pistons in your calipers are moving, 2 of mine were siesed and it juddered like hell under heavy breaking

To be honest mate, yes I did but I've got a memory like a thingymijig(?)

Have downloaded the link and stored it in a safe place for future reference (now where the hell did I save that to?)

some wee hints.

when you go to take hub flange off don't take nuts off all the way, instead loosen to near end of threads and then insert 2 bolts into the holes in flange and push it off by tightening these bolts. then a wee chap with a hammer will make the cone washers ping forwards, then fully undo the flange nuts being careful to not lose any spring or cone washers.

a 55mm socket is needed if you want to use the correct torque settings for seating the bearings.

inside the hub after you clean out some of the grease you will be able to drift out old bearing seats easily as there are recesses to allow a 3/4 inch square drift in to hit them.

yoshie can give you torque settings as they are still in his garage.

oh, and try to get all of the old grease out of hub and from hub shaft before repacking.
try and get the rear grease seal as flush with rear of hub as possible.
