I'd describe our receptionist as pneumatic...

I would tend to agree that air would be very slow, and large loads tend to be lifted by liquids as they dont compress.
However saying that I also think that a set (or probably 2 sets) of gas struts should be fine.
I created a trap door in my floor at home (dont ask, I want to look under my floor) and I hooked up an electric door release to this and a set of gas struts and it works really well.
I dont know weights but it is heavy about 2ft by 2ft with a total of 30mm marine ply and real stone tiles on top.
My struts came off a celica boot (I happened to have a set lying around!!)

Mark i got an electric ram off the old stair lift if ya want it to play about with,
dont know it's capacity tho, it was used to lift a foot step as the old lift did'nt go round the bend at the top i'll post a pic if ya want, think it's 12v as all the accessory stuff was

I would go air - then you can also use it for re-inflating tyres after offroading, air tools for changing wheels, air bags.......the list is only limited by your imagination.....and that is .......well .........imaginative

well vince seeing as you havnt used it for ten years do you wanna dust it off and help me out. ive a limited knowledge of hydraulics and pneumatics only in the marine trade.extra heavy duty stuff,im not quite up on smaller stuff and newer technology.gas struts would be ok but its getting the struts matched to the weigh other wise they will go up to quickly and be a right bas..rd to push back down again.i would like to go with air as most people have said if i fit a receiver i can use it to air up and use power tools.i think if the air rams are regulated with mini regulators then i would be able to control the speed at which they lift and also the amount of weight they will lift,by fitting oversized rams this shouldnt be to difficult its mainly the control gear side of it im not to sure of.obviously i would go for an old truck air brake cylinder for the reciever as it has a built in blow off valve, and two spool valves one to raise and one to lower.its just the bits in between.also what would be a good compressor to use.the arb locker one ?????

Sounds like you need a simple double acting ram set-up like this..........

The 5 port valve is electrically operated, by means of a solenoid, energised to lift, de-energised to lower. The speed is controlled by the pressure regulator on the reservoir.

                    Cool!

Obviously you'll need to work out how heavy the platform will be fully loaded, to see what size ram/rams you'll need.

                        Mark,

The ARB compressor is expensive (but good)

The one I got is really powerful, I would recommend.......

Can you not use an A/C pump off a Rover Vitesse SDi or Range Rover? It should mount OK on your Rover block with all the brackets .
