  • 2.4 Vs 3.0

Sorry for this newbie question, but I'm sure y'all are used to me by now...

    2.4 Vs 3.0?

I've got a 2.4 and love it dearly, however I'm moving up to a 3.0 soonest, prolly early next year. Thing is I notice a lot of you guys who know what your on about here drive 2.4's. What are the benefits/drawbacks when you compare the two? My Da has a 3.0 and says my 2.4 will be better of fuel economy which I kinda figured due to engine size. And I know the 2.4 have cylinder head dramatics. 3.0 equal more power... My main reason for the move up is reliability. I'm not ready to get rid of my Surf, took my long enough to get one, but I think in the long run over in Germany the reliability of a 3.0 will make my life easier... most German mechanics ain't seen a Surf from what I can gather...

    As usual, Cheers in advance!

The 3.0 gets better MPG, as you have to give it less stick to get going.

The 2.4 is a fine motor once you're over the head thing, but the 3.0 is just better in all areas as its a 10 year or so newer design, vastly more power (95 vs 130hp) and is much more suited to pulling a 2ton truck around.

Christ youre up bright and early .!! The 2.4 is no more economical than the 3.0. They are pretty much the same. The 3.0 l is a bit more powerful, but not by a huge amount. Enough to be noticeable but not enough to blow you away.
The 2.4 does have head problems however, if fitted with the original head. That was reason enough for me to change up to a 3.0L. If however it has already had the head done and has the "upgrade" ( 3L) head fitted, that worry should go away, and otherwise they are identical vehicles. I had a 2.4 for 2 years with no problems at all, although the head did go with the guy I sold it to. I then had a 3.0L for a year again with no problems and just this week have sold that and bought the ultimate surf, an intercooled 3rd gen.
In short , if you have a 2.4 and you KNOW it has the uprated head, and its otherwise in good nick I would see no immediate reason to go for a 3.0L. Youre not going to gain an awful lot.
