My wife works at Leeds university last friday one of their gardeners was driving a tractor on L plates and the local police stopped him. They threatened to impound the tractor as he only had a provisional licence. Does anyone know if its legal to drive on the road in a tractor with L plates I've checked dvla site but theres nothing there only info I can find is you can drive a tractor at 16 but obviously you cant have a full car licence at that age.

think youll find he needs a full licence if driving a tractor i know it was 30 years ago but aint driven one since then

i just been reading up and he can only drive on a public highway with L plates if going to or fro from a driving test.it has changed so much over the past several years now.but the police were right in what was said

Thanks for the replies just begs the question how do you learn to drive a single seat tractor on the road if you can't drive it on a provisional licence.

This was my argument several years ago.Especially as a tractor is more dangerous than a car as far as i'm concerned in the wrong or in-experienced hands.Plus if its legal to drive to and fro a test centre on a provisional licence then you should be allowed to drive at any other time, or the tractor should be taken there by someone with a full licence.These laws need to be looked into and something done about them after all its a motorised vehicle that can kill the same as a car motorbike lorry etc.The only way to get around it and thats to do your test at a college therefore not needing to drive on a main road

The last time I drove a tractor (a while ago ) you can drive on a public road without a license at at all, if you need to travel on that road to get from one field to another in order to carry out work in those fields. The following may be of some help.

You can drive a tractor without a valid licence as long as it remains on your own land.

You only have to be 17-years-old to drive a tractor unaccompanied on a public road.

Agricultural vehicles are not legally required to have an MOT.

No tractors may exceed 20mph on a public highway.

Farmers have not had to pay road tax on their tractors since April 2001, although you still have to display a free tax disc or receive a £200 fine.

Regulations state that tractors holding up traffic should pull over at a suitable passing place or risk a charge of "driving without reasonable consideration for other road users."

VOSA has the power to stop vehicles on the road and if they present a risk to other road users they can be prohibited from use.

also if your specialist vehicle does not have space for two people on board, your instructor:

* may have to walk alongside you calling out advice
* needs to keep out of your way but be close enough to see what you’re doing
