an hour commute every day does get you down after a while, getting up extra early to de-frost the windscreen.

at the moment i'm only driving 20-30 minutes to work, but leaving home at 0600 and getting back at 1930, then having a shower, driving 35 miles to see Mrs Slug, watch the repeat of eastenders and getting home again at midnight... it's a right pi$$er!!!

i was working for an events company before and that was worse!!... start work at 0300, drive to edinburgh, then do a days work rigging...

awesome money in it, but it's not everything!!
nee nar nee nar, i'm a fire engine!

As long as it pays the bills, that's all you need from a job. The most money doesn't always mean the best job.

Decisions are a bugger - and it's damn near impossible to make them for other people ....

IMHO work needs to be variable to maintain interest BUT commuting is a major no-no if you have children - in your position I'd go for the local job paying more and keep my eyes open for something better on the horizon.

I've had 3 jobs in my 33 year working life and I currently spend 2.5 hours a day driving back and forth to work ......... the upside is that 22 years were spent in the Army so the job changed at least every three years (usually more often) and I've spent over 9 years in an IT firm as a consultant so again the job changes regularly - can't do a thing about the commuting but fortunately the kids are now pushing 15 so they don't care if I'm around or not

        Good Luck !

Thanks for all the replies guys, I really appreciate it

Local job that I am the only one interviewing for is a very good company to work for, its also huge, so lots of prospects there

Current company is ok, people are nice, but as lots of you have said, the frustrating stuff will still be there if the money is more

Am sure after a period of time at a new employer I can persuade them to be a little flexible

          Hmmm

Commute wouldn't normally bother me, but it would bugger up your pre-work horsey routine and also how much you could do in the evenings, so knowing you the local new job is better.

But dull jobs soul destroying long term, just ask Linda, no matter how good they are.

Where you are now has big advantage about slopeing off to play, and get your truck fixed !! But its a bit of a dead end, along with an annoying co-worker!

If want my opinion, new local job is fav, that way we wouldn't have to wait to long for you to get home when getting pizza.

I'd go with TonyN and the others that suggest go for the local new job. I've worked on 2 hour commutes (but only Monday & Friday) and 1 hour commutes and all can be very stressful, especially if you hit bad traffic, road accidents etc.

I now work about 20 mins from home if I walk or 6 mins on the pushbike. The work isn't worderfully stimulating but the lack of stress is great. And with being a single Mum, you will need to be able to get home quickly on occasions, so definitely stay local.

                Go For It

                Hi Toots

You been treated like a dogsbody for too long so go for the local one but remember the flexibility you get at the moment . Tell them what you are going to do and see what they say . They may come up with more than the 5K

FWIW - I agree with Tony - go for the local job. Even if its a bit boring short term there is a lot of prospects for advancement to less boring jobs, and more money. Your current job is a dead end which may leave you out of a job in two years, and you have a LOT of $$$$e to put up with.

OK - maybe it won't be quite as flexible horse wise, but lots of other people manage very well, and you may find they are willing to be flexible once they see how hard you work the rest of the time.

New local job gives you tons of options longer term, and more money will add to 2nd horse fund.
                        Linda

                          I agree with them ^^^^^^

Local job every time. Before you take it, tell them what you want in terms of flexible working and they should be quite accommodating.

If it's boring, there will always be another high paid job an hour away.

Hey - how's it going - how is Terry getting along?

Current place knew from the outset I was looking, boss even said to me Monday he was hoping I would change my mind, but they have not even made me an offer

So, second interview for local one went well, I got offered the job & thanks to my agent at another £2K over what they were offering me to start with, which was already £2-5K over what they had originally budgeted

So only ended up £3K off the other one & an hour and a half commute each way aren't worth it for that money

So have accepted the local one & am just waiting for contracts before handing in notice
