  • Some I.T. help please!!

I have this DVD/CDRW drive in my laptop (Dell Latitude C610)
    http://www.val-u-computers.co.uk/aca...llcseriescombo

5th one down the page, the 80 quid one.
Ever since installing Windows XP DVDs won't play, I get the error message 'Driver not found or not installed' It plays/reads CDs OK though.

Is there a driver I can download somewhere, or is it hidding inside my laptop somewhere?

p.s. The laptop was running Windows 2000 before when the DVD worked if that helps. I can play DVDs if I boot up in W.2000 mode.

p.p.s. No abbreviated techno babble please, I'm not 18 any more you know!

    Thanks awfully.

Have a look on the Dell website for the right drivers - they should have them for XP - and look around for the DVD specific software

you should be able to get it off the dell website somewhere, could be one of these if it's the original drive for that machine http://support.euro.dell.com/support...n&lnki=0&s=gen

Usually XP is fairly good with picking up drives, but I had a similar problem a couple of years ago with mine. It was just using a generic CD driver, which is why you've still got the CD functionality.

Have a look round the Dell links, but if you can't find the bit you need, you may need to uninstall the drive in Windows and then let it go for the newest drivers (from Microsoft or where ever it feels like picking them up)

Shout if the Dell stuff isn't any use and I'll try to stick something together that makes sense and sorts it for you.

If there's a sticker on it with manufacturer and a serial number, that would be useful as well.

go to control panel then click system then click hardware go down half way click devise manager (opens new window) you will see were it says dvd/cd rom click the plus box at the side of dvd/cd rom the full name of your dvd will be in there now (on dell you can right click and up date driver) or
you can double click the name of your dvd rom (opens new window) and install a new driver from there by (the disk you got with the dvd rom) or trying if its on windows 2000 if you get stuck i help you (try the auto option first)

Wow! Didn't epect any replies at this time of night/morning.

I've downloaded a DVD decoder now and I can play any DVD, even DVD+RWs through Windows media player 10, just watched a bit of 'Me, myself and Irene' (Jim Carrey film, funny) that I recorded a few weeks ago.

Thanks for all your feedback, at least I know where to look later on now should I find any glitches with this decoder, but so far so good!

Yep, tried that, but it came back with .....Windows couldn't find a better driver than the one already installed' or something like that.
