  • Private air display last Sunday...

Didn't have time to post this at the weekend:

Sunday lunchtime - making lunch. Noise outside - that sounds like a Merlin, so outside we go (self and No 1 son).

Yes, it's a Spitfire, looks like a Mk9 or possibly a 14, doing aerobatics over the fields behind my house. He was flying between the bridges at Farningam and Eynsford, turning at each end with an Immelmann or split S. Went up and down 5 or 6 times, then finished with an immaculate roll then headed off towards either Biggin Hill or Shoreham.

At the top of said field is a memorial to Flt Lt James Paterson MBE, who died in his Spitfire on 27th September 1940. The memorial was raised last September, with a dedication ceremony and a flypast. This may have been a repeat performance.

No1 son was absolutely transfixed, and I have to admit to a small lump in the throat as well.

The plane may have been something to do with the filming, but I suspect the little display was more to do with the memorial - he was flying quite low (1,000 feet or less) although not quite low enough to read the reg without binoculars (and there was no way I was going to miss any of it by going to rummage in the loft for binoculars!)

very impressive planes ( from someone that knows nothing about planes ) they were below the level of the hills so must have been only a few hunderd feet off the ground and then performing loops and rolls - and they were really reall quick

          reagrds,

Just started.. fired a few off in the back garden last night, for the first time. The lodger had a go, but he's rubbish. Made it all myself, too! Haven't really got much idea yet, but it's fun, all the same

Where I live I get a private display from Caroline Grace and her 2 seat Spitfire - she annually flies over Borde Hill and this end of town is near by.
