  • Sorry to ask gents!

    Morning Gents,

Bought a Surf last week from Liverpool Port Auctions, went originally to buy a Pajero but couldn't resist the one I saw. It is a 1993 L reg - 3.0 SSR-X.

Might find this hard as I bought it but don't know anything about them and need some help. Apologies if this has been asked a million times before or in the wrong forum but you look a nice set of blokes so if you can add anything would really appreciate it!

    1) I have been reading some threads about changing thermostat so not to crack the head does this apply to the 3.0 ssr-x.
    2) What is the o/d button for on the auto stick. I think mine has been on since started to drive it but not sure if it should be! Light on dash shows it is off when pressed. Will it be better fuel if on/off what does it do?
    3) Can I change the stereo for a normal english standard one with no problems or do I have to do a load of changes?
    4) 4WD - I have the stick at the side of the auto stick but not sure when to use it. I believe i turn it on by pressing button on side but can you do this when driving/in motion. When should I press the 4 wd and what is the difference between top middle or botton on the stick position. Don't want to do anything stupid and I can't find a handbook for it.

First time driven a 4x4 so apologise for the stupid questions. Any info on the ssr-x..what it can or can't do would be appreciated. It has 102000Kms on clock and went through MOT with no problems. Anything I should do before start driving it...belt change or thermostat change or anything like that.

Thanks in advance for your help guys and sorry for the length of post...
    Billy

    - Don't know about that... but the 2.4 were prone to head cracking, not sure of 3.0 tho, someone will be able to advise....

    - o/d keeps you to 3 gears... so its ok to have OFF around town (with light on dash) but when you get on a stretch you will want to have it on again to give you your remaining gears for cruising....
I have tested driving round town with o/d on and re fuel consumption, makes hardly any difference....
    3) Can I change the stereo for a normal english standard one with no problems or do I have to do a load of changes?
    - yeah you can, I have, you need a double din to single din plate converter which you can get from halfords or similar, its a pain to fit and there are details on this site if you search for it...
    4) 4WD - I have the stick at the side of the auto stick but not sure when to use it. I believe i turn it on by pressing button on side but can you do this when driving/in motion. - Only use 4WD when your off road, it will get damaged if you use it on the road... the top and the bottom of the stick are high and low ratio gearbox selectors... best bet to see the difference is get on some mud or grass etc... and have a play, that way you will see what effect each has on the gearing etc...

Try this link for lots of info, not all of it refers to your model but it's interesting stuff. Overheating problems seem to be mostly restricted to the 2.4 engine, however it is always a good idea to flush the system, and replace with a UK spec coolant, approved for use with Toyota engines. The radio can be replaced easily, and Halfrauds apparently sell a harness to make it easy for you, they also sell a pocket that will fill the space left if you fit a single DIN radio. All the rest is common sense, I recommend changing the timing belt, as that's the only way to be sure of when it next needs doing. Good luck, and enjoy it.

The head prblem applys to the 2.4.

it turn overdrive on/off. you can have it off around town and may get slightly better MPG3)

Can I change the stereo for a normal english standard one with no problems or do I have to do a load of changes?

        Simple job

        4) 4WD - I have the stick at the side of the auto stick but not sure when to use it. I believe i turn it on by pressing button on side but can you do this when driving/in motion. for normal road driving 4wd should be off. the stick positions are high and low ratio.
