Truetrac diff

Has any one on here fitted/running a Truetrac LSD? or know what there like?

im not familiar with the truetrac, but stein has an lsd fitted (and it works) if i didnt have that i would be in a whole heap of trouble.both on and off road.

My 2nd gen has the G285 LSD fitted as standard, which was also fitted to the 3.0 litre supra, it seems to still be working ok, after nearly 18 years.

Are they the ones with clutch plates? do they behave differently to the truetrac ones as sold by Milners. Like, do they need both wheels on the ground to work like some LSD's
Also will they fit the 3rd Gen?

Mine would appear to need both wheels on the ground to work ( don't ask me why) and yes it has the clutch plates in.

I would think that lockers would be a better bet and probably cheaper too?

Do a search on the tinterweb - Truetrac are not LSD's.

Look for Aussie Lockers, Powertrax etc.

err, yes they are....



They are gear driven, instead of clutch plate, so long term reliability is better.

LSD's still deliver some differention, unlike a proper locker, so if you have a wheel in the air, you won't get 100% power to the wheel on the ground like if you had a locker.

On the plus side they will help automatically on loose ground, much better than a open diff.

If you lift a wheel and have a good tight LSD, try putting the handbrake on slightly, this loads the wheel in the air a little giving some power to the wheel on the floor.

Hang on a sec, did I read that Supra LSDs fit our Surfs???
I assume you keep the crown gear and swap the diff mechanism?

I'd not have thought that a torsen style LSD was ideal for a surf as if one wheel is totally unladen the LSD effect will be lost, unlike the friction plate/clutch type.

I have a nice torsen unit sat at home.... - but its for the supra!

you would need to make sure that it had he same diff ratio as the diff that you have on the front of the surf at the moment,,,i,m sure

But the ratio is dependant on the crown and pinion gear, not actual LSD unit itself???? What I meant was are the LSD units swappable

Do you know of any that will fit 3rd Gen (are 2nd & 3rd Gen's the same?) that
are cheeper than the truetrac which is £325.
