  • diff help urgent

    hi folks,

    my front diff is goosed, i know now that i need to get the same radio as my rear diff.

    now,,, my axle code is G254 G= 8" diff
    25= 4.556 ratio
    4= 4 pinion

    the thing that is worring me is that in my other thread most people seem to have the axle code G144 or G145. which 14= 4.875 ratio.

    does anybody else have these diff codes?

    how common are they?

    i can see me needing to get a pair so that they match up.

    cheers for any input

    thanks scotty

    Strange - 2nd gens normally have a 7.5'' front. And is normally a 2 pinion.

    Are you reading the code for the rear?

      There is only ever a code for the rear diff. The front is 7.5" and is assumed to be the same ratio as the rear (else it gets really interesting in 4wd ). 4.556 is a reasonably common ratio - my '90 2.4 had it.

          4.556 ratio is common in Surfs with an R150F Gearbox and the 4.875 is common in Surfs with the R151 gearbox. There are exceptions though. My opinion is the 4.556 ratio is better for road use and the 4.875 for offroad. I have 4.875 and want to change to the 4.556 because the R151F gearbox has a very low first and second gear.

            4.875 gearing is good if you want to go to bigger tyres such as 33"

                thanks folks,

                went to eurojap breakers today, they had 5 surfs, only one that matched the axle code that i need and guess what, NO front diff.

                went to see a 4 runner tonight, i has no vin plate on it, but the guy gave me the chassis no off the V5, so is there any way of checking with this what the trans/axle codes are?

                he offered me the whole thing for £400, which is tempting because it has a LSD rear. the 2 axles and the gearbox are still on it.

                so i could use the 2 axles, the gearbox will suit jeff hopefully, and i would s$$$$ the rest and get a few quid with any luck.

                i'll have to see what happens.

                cheers scotty
