Little red button problem

Hi there
This is my first post since buying a surf in February. I love it.
The lock on the gear lever (auto shift) of my 1992 surf does not unlock when the ignition is turned on or when the engine is started. Every time I want to change out of park I have to press the little red button even when the engine is running. This problem started last week and I would be grateful if anybody can provide the solution to the problem. Thanks

Hi, this may sound strange, but check that your brake lights are working.

I assume you know you have to press the brake pedal before shifting the gear lever?

Fuse for brake lights blown. Borrowed a trailer, friend needs to check his wiring.
