  • Auto transmission oil temp gauge

Can anyone recommend a good quality oil temporature gauge with a high temp warning light, around 50-60mm diameter, preferably electric with a sensor. How would u connect it to a 1994 Surf 3.0ltr KZN 130 auto box and what parts/ accessories are required? Anyone?

errr. in answer to your question.... no.

I'm looking at doing the same job to my surf, I've just got a oil temp gauge from fleabay, I think the pipe to tap it into is the offside pipe, which goes fromt the transmission oil cooler in the rad back to the gearbox, that is where the high temp warning light switch is (but actually on the gearbox). I think some of the mod shops do a little chamber that can be connected inline to fit the sensor.

Why would you want a warning light though? the surf already has one on

Spoke to a trans specialist today, said you could tap a sensor into the oil sump of the transmission which should give you a more accurate temp reading. I dont know whether taping into the rad oil cooler line would be very accurate as it is external to the trans. For heavy towing I spoke to Kenlowe re. additional oil coolers, and they highly recommended one for piece of mind on long journeys due to the fact I am running a 3.0ltr turbo with auto trans and air con. Heavy load!!! I have been losing water slowly lately and have just had to replace a cracked head (3 places) Haven't tested with caravan yet (1653kg). Got after market Italian made head from Rough Trax, toyota hilux specialist including full set of gaskets, refurbed valve gear ready to bolt on £850 (thicker casting to head) Toyota want £1040 just for bare unassembled head. So far so good. So just wanted to monitor the trans under load from now on.

The toyota temp sensor for the in dash ATF temp light is on the lower front O/S of the gearbox, you could replace that or use a 'T' so you keep the original light and just run a gauge.

I'm planning on doing it to Linda's soon, but most of her getting hot issues when towing really heavy trailers (2.5K ton + ) have gone now since not using the in-rad AFT cooler at all, just a stand alone cooler. It will get warm, purely on the engine working so hard up hills, not its no where near as bad as before when we used the in rad cooler as well.
