Vets bills? rant

i think we deserve slightly more than than the same as a mechanic! No offence to all those mechanics out there (i'm sure i'm severely outnumbered on this forum), but the vet course is considered the hardest uni course to even get a place on, despite getting 4 A's at A-level and then the course itself is 5yrs and not exactly a walk in the park. no apprenticeships with an opportunity to earn any money - it's 5yrs of study with not even any time for a part time job, working silly hours in the hospitals as free labour. then we have to pass finals which are as hard, if not harder than a doctors. a solicitor can charge £100-£200 an hour, as can a dentist (certainly mine does), why not a vet? You have to remember it's not just the vet you're paying for either, but the reception staff, the behind the scenes admin staff and all the nurses - we cant do our job without all of those and they want paying too. sometimes things will seem out of proportion, but on other occasions things will be good value for money. the dog i sat up with on friday night got charged £95 for the night - that's 4 hours of my time and 8hrs of a nurse's time - if we were to charge a properly hourly rate for our time it would be ridiculous in that case, so we have to make it up in other places - unfortunate for those who dont need the intensive care, but it's there when you do need it. i'm not defending every vet in the country - i'm sure there are some rip-off merchants around, but most of us are just trying to earn a half-decent living and really do care about what we do, otherwise we really wouldn't sit up till 4am nursing sick dogs and stress ourselves to sleep at night wondering if we've done the right thing with so and so's animal etc. i recently had a bill for 3k for surgery on my horse which didn't even fix him - my insurance covered 2k and i had to find the rest - i dont begrudge them a penny of it - i wish they'd managed to fix him after all that money which has taken me the last year to pay off, but i know they did their best and i know how expensive their equipment and knowledge is.Originally posted by CopycatI'm not against paying a reasonable fee, if I have to pay £30 to £40 an hour for a mechanic then I don't mind paying the same for a vet. I do begrudge paying £53 for 1 antibiotic injection and 5 minutes of the vets time, and that's no exageration.

he's 21 now so i barely have any cover at all anymore. last year they still agreed to pay 75% for illness, now it's accidents only up to £3000 and a max value on his head of £500 - to be he's priceless, but to anyone else he's 21 and lame and worthless - poor old boy.Originally posted by BibsSorry to hear about ya horse - I upped mine to 5 grand last year - thank god - I blame the pharmacital companies chargin a fortune for drugs.

Aww bless - makes me angry how they refuse to cover anythin you have claimed on - luckily (or not so) mine is just teeth at mo. Met a few lame ones that have lived happily for years so there's hope yet.Originally posted by Nikkihe's 21 now so i barely have any cover at all anymore. last year they still agreed to pay 75% for illness, now it's accidents only up to £3000 and a max value on his head of £500 - to be he's priceless, but to anyone else he's 21 and lame and worthless - poor old boy.

I have just read this thread and as part of the biggest dog owning association around I can only praise the Vets we come into contact with. The local vet that looks after my pups NEVER charges for consultations, rarely charges for drugs and dicounts all ops he performs.
When I first got involved with guide Dogs I thought he was the odd one out, I now know that the majority of vets look after GD stock in this way. so Nikki a big thank to you and your colleagus from many gratfull pups and dogs.

I'm a heating engineer, and my philosophy has always been" if I can't fix it, I won't charge you" I wish vets and mechanics did the same, they might get it right more of the time, instead of the customer paying for their learning curve.Rob
Still working for the man!
