I forget the exact rules, but generally there is no vat payable on foodstuffs, except perhaps luxury foods.

So, even when you buy veg oil in tesco it should not have vat charged, you just can't see that cos the bills do not show the vat element. You only get that at places like makro.

Yup. Coffee, chocolate and the like are taxed, (although not at standard tax rates), whilst those that are classed as essential or non luxury foodstuffs are not.
