Memory Map & GPS

Memory map is a cracking software. I have TomTom v5 and Memory Map both on the PDA and as long as you remember to exit TomTom properly so that the GPS is released for Memory Map.

Pre-plan routes on the PC and download the area and names of places to the SD card and then when on the route just switch on the follow route function and if need to edit straight forward to put new flags for warnings.

all this talk about memory map has reminded me ive got a lap top what else do i need to use memory map and how do i get it up and running.???

If you want to use it as a moving map on a laptop while you're driving, you need a compatible GPS, ie. a Garmin or Magellan. If you just want to look at maps and contours etc, and 'fly through' landscapes etc, you dont need anything else but the program.

What I want to do with it is record routes for future reference, and a moving map of the scale available gives you an idea of where you are. For instance, when we were in 'the forest of lost souls', I could have set a way point for where your car was, then recorded our route so we could retrace our steps.

Will be handy!

My laptop is gonna be busy in Wales in two weeks, I'll be using it to record the route with my GPS plugged into it, and recording video from a webcam on my lightbar!

The sort of things you see in Halfords that go on your dash. You just connect it via USB to your laptop and hey presto, loads more facilities!

If it's compatible with memory map (NMEA 0183 protocol - it'll be in your instruction book) it should work.

I've a bluetooth receiver that sits on the dash, and a USB receiver that's magnetic for outside.

I use the bluetooth one regularily with my phone, I got the USB one for the laptop, but somehow never get round to using it

Gizmo's talking about simple receivers which cant be used without plugging them in to a display device, the one I'm talking about is my common-or-garden Garmin Roadpilot, the type with an LCD screen. Anything with NMEA output will drive the software.

I use a Garmin Geko plugged into the usb port. Just had to get a couple of leads. Works fine and can be used anywhere else as well as is handheld gps unit.

I have an Orange SPV M700 mobile phone. It has a built in GPS receiver, does TomTom and Memory map. Nice and simple, single box solution.

Just put memory map for Wales and the midlands on my laptop and found that my Garmin GPS interfaces with it and drives the moving map great!
