  • Ever fixed a gear box?

Great way to start the week. Gear box in the hilux lost 1st, 3rd, 4th gears. To make matters worse was on the beach with 50kms of track and 180kms of road to nearest town. Managed to get back to civilization after much swearing, cursing & holding it in second

When I got back to town went and saw the gearbox blokes.

They diagnosed the problem and defined it as
"Its a Fu$%ed gear boxmate" Gota love aussie mechanics.

Got qouted $2000 to $2500 to rebuild it. (1000 pounds). So am wondering if any of your fellas rebuilt a gear box before. whats envolved, can you download any manuals from a site, have all the time in the world now cause im not going any where, my Hilux is a 1989 2.8d 4x4 ute with 5 speed manual

    Hi Matt,

get the gearobx code off the bulkhead ident. plate and do a search for info. I think your may be R151 or something like that.

    some info - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_...smission#R151F

The boxes are not that complex but you usually need specialist tools to strip them down so can be a real pain. Dropping the box off and fitting another one will be a lot easier.

I'd look to get a second hand one from a breaker - should be a few around that'll fit your truck. Have a look on ebay.

      thanks mate

Managed to get a manual from the local library How flukey is that. Dropped the gear box etc. Opened it up and the housing is cracked. So it cant be rebuilt. Price from wreckers and the parts to recondition it worked out dearer than buying an exchange recon box. So one recon box comming up.
      Cheers for the advise TLB
