This is the law in the UK, but you can get plates made out of the UK (Ireland for example) which still meet the UK gudelines and which do not have the makers name on etc which are still legal (if the spacing and fonts are correct).

    This will help more..

I had a link to the DVLA which sets out the guidelines but I can find it. There is a way of having a tiny number plate on your car if there is no room for a full size one too.. like what you see on some Evos etc..
Actually it is size dependent - we had a small one on our Evo and got pulled and fined and had to replace it, ya can cut the plate size down but they pull ya for the size of letters, or if they have nothin better to do.
How can I be lost when I've got no where to go

Unfortunatley in making that plate for the intention of road use, you broke the law. The shop you purchased the white backing and letters from should have had a sign stateing that they were not to be used to make registration plates.
This law came in place about four years ago. Only registered businesses are allowed to make registration plates, supposedly to stop people makeing plates to clone cars.
Of course if you made that plate and placed it on your vehicle before the law changed (I think January 2003, but don't quote me on that) then it is entirely legal.
      Gone from 4x4 to 1x2

It was fitted last year when I put the new spots on.. The letters are the correct size and all of the info needed (manufacturer etc) was on the plate.. till I cut it down to make it smaller..

You can have stick on plates as long as you dont cut them down and the spacing is correct etc.. (which mine isnt).

My kit car will need one on the bonnet as you cant see the one it has underneath due to the possition of it..

The guy that did it today took my V5 and drivers license and is an approved plate maker...so I hope it's legal, and he didn't tell me it not to be used for the road....

I was told that using stick ons were not legal because they could be tampered with, when I made up my rear plate, stick on background/letters on ali plate, I covered the finished item with clear sticky film and was told that made it legal. I was under the impression that plates had to be vertical though. No one has pulled me and it has gone through MOT's with no probs
Did I mention I have a BLUE one

Up here we can smoke in our own car but NOT in any company car or van, local fag enforcement jobsworths are wandering the streets with digi cameras and notebooks to record coupons and number plates and you will get fined but the company is the big loser they get a massive fine, my guys have been warned it's a sacking offence as far as I am concerned.

With regards to sticky No plates your police reli and MOT buddy are wrong, these NRQ cameras aint even under police control even though they are fitted to traffic cars any warning of no MOT / tax / insurance is instantly recorded by the DVLA and THEY issue and collect fines and in the same instance any numberplate the camera cannot read is a sure fire pull 'cos DVLA will want to know why and the action police take will be carefuly watched.

Where and how the plate if fitted may make it camera readable therefor legal but stuck on top of the bonnet as most do, I doubt whether the camera could read that.

Plates MUST have the makers details shown, any French / Irish are sold as "show" plates only not road legal.

All my guys had to do a refresher course a few months ago re number plates and some of the above may not be law yet but soon will be 'cos NRQ cameras will be everywhere = less police = more revenue = safer roads?

Or so the UK gov DVLA tell us.

No chance. Jnr got his piccie took last week by a fag jobsworth, fortunatly it was an unmarked hire van and the waster couldnt get thru to his office to check regi number. When he asked Jnr for his details he was told to "fuk off" and Jnr drove off.

As my van is sign written ( I'm self employed) can I smoke in my own van?

It is a works van, but I own it ( or will do when its's paid for)

In that case I'm probably wrong, I thought you ment the ones where you make them yourself.
If you have any concerns your best bet (and this may sound stupid) is to ask a Policeman, say it was like that when you bought it but your concerned. I did this when I first got mine cause the dealer put the plate behind the spot lights. The Policeman did not tick me but explained that he would pull me if seen cause it wasn't entirly visible (some of them are human).

If you do need to refit it lower if you get 2 pieces of 1mm steel cut to the size of the plate, and bolt the plate on through the steel, the plate will survive most things. I did this mod after an outing with Danno where my number plate returned in two pieces. After the mod I even hit a rock with the plate (another Danno outing) and survived the dreaded Woodzie outing.

Sorry, your post was not clear, I assumed that when you said "works" vehicle, it would be owned by your employer, whereas I am my employer, and my company van actally belongs to me, just wanted some clarification.

You cant smoke in a company van/car/lorry even if you do own it, the fag police are council "worked" so most are ignorant jobsworths who love to throw their weight around, there are two in Motherwell and their favorite ticket is where folk smoke in shop doorways thinking they are "outside" WRONG, £30 fine, same ticket for stamping on your fag end 'cos remember outside there are no ashtrays and you aint allowed to fling em in the bin so that fine is almost gauranteed, the local councils are making BIG money they sit in cars with digi cameras then raid shops, workshops or any workplace with that stupid sniffer they wave around or in Jnr's case sneek around in car parks taking photo's of anybody smoking in vans.
