Stick on Number plates

I lost my front number plate (again) yesterday, so I've opted for a stick on one on the bonnet - are these legal??

I've bought a screw in one too, just in case, but thought I'd pootle about for a while with the bonnet one on only and see if anything happens......

Well, it's on there now - so if I get pulled, I'll just put the other one on too - just tired of shelling out £14 quid every few weeks after offroading.....

Took about 0.03 of a second for the bough wave I created to rip it straight off - did the same at Avon Dassett a while back, and again in Derbyshire - so now I have a backup plan to keep a plate on the front - just see if the police agree with it.....

Thanks..I was actually thinking of gluing a metal plate behind the number plate and then bolting it back onto the the b/bar so it don't get pulled of when off roading

Or....

You could get a plate that you could attach to the b/bar, made from abs plastic or metal, then screw the plate into that - makes for easier removal offroad if you needed to.....then the number plate can be changed more easily or removed...just thinking out loud.

that a registration mark can be " indelibly inscribed or permantly attached "
"may be displayed on a flat retangular plate, or on a flat retangular and
unbroken area on the surface of the vehicle"
So I would say if it is a vinal type number plate on the bonnet of the car
that should be legal ?

Illegal.

As you will find out the first time you drive past a cop car with a plate reading camera (NRQ), these cameras check you insurance, tax & MOT instantly and will soon to be found on every major road in the UK this is why the big No plate clampdown.

If you are nice to the cop he should let you drive home (complete with £30 fine) to change your plate, if you aint nice or the cop is in a bad mood your car will be impounded!

WARNING... If this is a private plate and you get caught 3 times "your" plate reverts back to the DVLA to be sold again.

All new plates are dry substrate IE dull sticky letters covered with a sticky non reflective film on a high vis reflective plate which must show who made the number plate and the UK Gov have warned all manufacturers that a log will be needed soon listing any plates made and none issued without the vehicles V5 + owners signiture.

ps... I got stopped twice in one day and the plod took piccie's of my nice wee motorcycle plate, mibbi he liked it or perhaps he wants my private plate?

Not true I'm sorry to say.. You are allowed these if you so wish. The background and letters meet the needed standards.. I checked with my brother in law (copper) and also with a mate who is a MOT tester..

These kind of plates are still picked up on the plate reading cam as they do meet the standards of the hard plates.

This is the law in the UK, but you can get plates made out of the UK (Ireland for example) which still meet the UK gudelines and which do not have the makers name on etc which are still legal (if the spacing and fonts are correct).

I had a link to the DVLA which sets out the guidelines but I can find it. There is a way of having a tiny number plate on your car if there is no room for a full size one too.. like what you see on some Evos etc..

Lyall.. on another note.. what the smoking laws up your way for smoking in your won car while on the road etc.. I do work up there a lot and my workmate smokes but he has been told he isnt allowed to smoke in the van or he could get fined?
