What would cause screeching fanbelt on starting engine

the rest of the time engines running, itss fine regardless of revs

    does that mean alternators
    too slack or too tight

    or something elses?

    Belts too slack.
It quietens after a couple of revolutions 'cos the friction warms it up and makes it sticky.

      Thanks

been such a long time since I replaced one let alone anything else,
      I'd quite forgotten

It may be that the belt is old, a bit perished, and gone hard, so it slips until friction etc. etc.

          Bob

I pulled up the alternator a bit more this morning
with a bar beneath it, its stopped squeeling on starting but now does it on revving a bit,
so I suspect in line with some other neglect on the vehicle its just been left too long

time for new belt I reckon
