Noisy engine?

Hi, I'm trying to buy a used 2.4TD or 3lt.
I went and had a look at a 3lt (M reg) today and it looked great, but when we pulled away it made a noise like the fan belt was slipping (high whining noise), it got worse as you rev'd. Once we opened the bonnet it sounded like the noise was coming from deeper in the engine, not the fan area.
Any ideas what this might be? Should it be avoided?

ok thanks. The guy who is selling it hasn't had it running for about 4 months, just turns it over every couple of weeks. Would that explain anything?

I'd still steer clear. As others have said, there's LOOOODS to choose from. Go for a PERFECT one. It's a buyers market!
