  • Fuel Gauge / mpgs

I know there are a million posts on mpg's but I wondered.....
Mine seems like its gonna put out some really ok figures, if I stick in a full tank, about £40's worth of diesel, by the time i'm down to half a tank i have done around 170miles ish.... so the law of logic would suggest that I might get potentially 340 miles in total....
However, it seems as soon as I look away from my gauge after the halfway mark it races to the bottom!
I end up getting about 225miles before the red light comes on which is when I always fill up.
I work that out to be around 20mpg - I do do a reasonable amount of town driving, but probably 40% is A-Roads also...
Does everyones gauge read like that or is it just mine!
I've redex'd it which didn't make much difference the air filter is pretty clean, and I don't have a specifically heavy right foot... any suggestions or just something I have to live with?
    Cheers

yeah my gauge is the same steady for 3/4 of a tank then drops quickly, that said I fill up reset trip, do 300 miles then fill up again. Almost on the empty white line when i fill up. If I stick to all town driving this drops the mpg quite a bit.
This does seem to be a subject which varies a lot, people getting from 20mpg to 30mpg. I dont think there is any hard and fast rule as to what you get from a tank. My best ever was 362 miles and the light didn't come on, steady drive up to Clacton one day, then down to Kingston the next, 342 miles on a tank after a drive up to norfolk, So they do seem to behave and return more on a nice run (providing your not caning it) than round town but then thats the same as all motors round town you suffer, motorway etc its better.
Say not always what you know, but always know what you say.

Yeah true enough, you would think that with all the electronics they could make a reliable fuel gauge wouldn't you!!
I am moving house soon which will mean my drive to work (the town bit) will be pure duel carriadge way, so be interesting to see how it changes...

The gauge is pretty reliable, but as it is a float on an arm that sends the info, when the arm drops to halfway that does not mean you have half a tank left. This is because of the shape of the fuel tank, if you look at a cross section of it the majority of fuel is in the top half

I never ever apologise for anything. http://www.onestopshopformultimedia.com/smile.gif If you dont like it I am sorry but thats the way I am

Well in that case I take it all back!
Still you would have thought they might have been able to make a guage that is more volumetric....
interesting to have that info tho....
How much are people getting after the red light comes on out of the tank... I never run past it but should I get in a tight spot... how far could I hope to go?

Lindas had 20miles with red light on, normally it means there is a gallon left, dunno if its 'metricifyied' as its from Japan.
